Mean Green Screen / HIV Test Site
Mean Green Screen
- HIV screening
- Screening for mental health
The Mean Green Screen began in 1993 when the Student Health & Wellness Center implemented a free, anonymous HIV test site. HIV testing has been offered every semester since then with thousands of UNT students receiving education and risk reduction counseling as part of each session. The screening is free thanks to the support of community agencies, the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse (GDCADA), and Tarrant County Mental Health & Mental Retardation. Professionals from these agencies join Meadows Center staff to provide this service. The HIV test site provides the latest in testing technology with the OraQuick Advance HIV Antibody Test which gathers cells from a person's outer gums by a swabbing process. Results are available in less than 30 minutes.
HIV Test Kits are provided by grants and funding through the state Department of Health Services and the Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. All persons who schedule an appointment for the screening test must be identified as having a risk exposure, such as unprotected sexual activity, multiple partners or other exposure to blood or body fluids. Before each testing session trained Prevention Based Counselors must assess the risk and determine the need for testing. Persons with no identified risk will receive education services but will not be eligible for HIV testing.
Participants in the testing should allow one hour for the process. Each session includes pre-test counseling, risk reduction education, test administration, test results and post-test counseling. To schedule an appointment, please call (940)565-2787. Testing for HIV infection uses the OraQuick Advance HIV Antibody Test which gathers cells from a person's outer gums by a swabbing process, so a blood sample is not collected.
In addition to the HIV testing, the Meadows Center staff provides mental health screening for a variety of mental health concerns. Professional staff will assess each individual situation or concern and provide resources, tools and referrals as needed. Available screenings include:
- Alcohol use
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Eating disorders

Summary of Programs
The Meadows Center for Health Resources offers variety of programs for the on-campus needs of the students of the University of North Texas. Programs are conducted by highly trained professionals who are knowledgeable in all pertinent areas of health education. The purpose of these presentations is to enable UNT students to make responsible and informed health decisions. Programs are often serious in nature but presenters strive, whenever possible, to make these presentations light-hearted, fun and informative.
"Sex and Candy" program is a huge hit, participants exchanging candy with one another at random, with various sweets representing different sexually transmitted infections. Topics discussed include signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted infections as well as contraception and the HPV vaccine. "Girl Talk" is an exclusively female event. Presenters give out information on safer sex practices as well as relationship violence. "Sex in the Dark" is yet another program dealing with sexual responsibility. Activities include a condom relay race, trivia games, and distribution of safer sex kits.
But not all of the Meadows Center's programs are about sex. Presentations focus on common health and wellness concerns problems experienced by UNT students. Topics such as "What is Normal Eating?" and "Food and Mood" provides students with information related to healthy eating, body image, and how changing eating habits can substantially affect your outlook on life. UNT Athletics teams and Fraternities have participated in Alcohol Education Programs. Stress Management, another popular topic discussed at a presentation held both at Victory Hall in the spring semester.
If you are interested in scheduling a program please review the Meadows Center for Health Resources even calendar and the complete the online Program Request form or call the Program Scheduling office at 940-565-2421.
Please keep in mind that the Health Educators do programming all over the campus for many different departments, organizations, and staff/faculty. So if it is at all possible, have multiple dates in mind when requesting a program.
Safer Spring Break
The Apple Team composed of student-athletes, and advisors, the Meadows Center for Health Resources, and the ONE Peer Education Network are dedicated to the well-being of the University of North Texas. Our mission is to promote safety and awareness for Spring Break 2008. The name of our Safer Spring Break Campaign this year is "Don't get Burned in '08!"
The Apple Team, UNT athletics, and ONE members distributed 500 bags loaded with sunscreen, condoms, and alcohol awareness brochures to help encourage a safer spring break! We hope to increase the number of students who practice safer sex, drink responsibly, avoid underage drinking and use sunscreen. Our campaign will not only provide anyone interested with a bag of goodies but will also demonstrate to the campus and UNT students that we, as athletes, staff, and peer educators do care about the future and well-being of others. We are proud to be part of this campaign and to affirm our commitment to responsible decision making. We know that our efforts will, in fact, make a difference in the lives of our students and others.
On March 4, our table was located at the Northeast corner outside the University Union, and on March 5th the table was indoors near the Campus Chat. Both days the table was staffed from 10 am to 1 pm. We will asked over 200 students to sign a pledge stating that they will use safer sex practices and drink responsibly during spring break.
Wellness Wednesday
When it comes to Wednesdays, "Hump Day" is "Health Day" at the University of North Texas. The UNT Meadows Center for Health Resources hosts Wellness Wednesdays for all students in the University Union from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
A table in the One O'clock Lounge is manned with representatives from the Meadows Center; pamphlets and other informational tools about the weekly topic are also readily available to all students. The topics are chosen based on national health observances, health issues, popularity and campus concerns and include issues such as sexual and reproductive health, relationship violence, drug, alcohol and tobacco education, eating disorders, nutrition and information about upcoming programs and events.
"We try to work each event around the month's health observance campaign," said Lauren Aguilera, Peer Education Coordinator for the Meadows Center.
According to Lauren, the events currently attract an average of 30 students per week. She said plans for implementing games and giveaways are in progress, and she hopes to involve more students.
"We want to let the students know why we're here," said Lauren. "We're here for them. If we can reach into the crowd and change one person's life by providing them with the education and knowledge they never had, that's what makes it all worthwhile.".
